I was curious how this active pull down affected the circuit, so I implemented a similar circuit using CircuitLab. Here is an example from TI's SN74LS93 datasheet. The lower totem-pole transistor of a LSTTL IC frequently has an active pull-down from base to emitter (ground). "Push pull" means a circuit can either push charge out (source current) or pull charge in (sink current). Active pull-down in LSTTL totem-pole output. The only commonality is that they "bridge" two circuits that would otherwise be independent. There are many other bridge circuits made of different components and with different uses. The H bridge gets its name from looking like an H. I've seen other circuits that have a series of components between power and ground called "totem pole" as well.Ī "half bridge driver" is called that because it's half of a "full bridge driver", also known as an H bridge. (power, resistor, transistor, diode, transistor, ground). "Totem Pole" is named such because the classic TTL output driver somewhat looks like the tall vertical statues, because of the 4 elements stacked vertically between power and ground. It might help to know what the names refer to.
